Schreuders prize 2022 awarded to Bike Parking IJboulevard!
21 June 2022
We are proud to announce that our project Bike Parking IJboulevard, in collaboration with Van Hattum & Blankevoort and the municipality of Amsterdam, is the winner of the prestigious Schreuders Prize 2022! The Schreuders Prize is awarded to exceptional achievements in the field of underground construction – to stimulate and inspire optimal use of space in densely built areas in the Netherlands. The prize also includes a sum of 25.000 euros, which Van Hattum en Blankevoort will use to enthuse youth in the field of engineering.
About IJboulevard’s optimal use of the space: at one of the busiest public transport hubsin the Netherlands, Amsterdam Central, we are building a (semi) floating, underwater storage facility for 4,000 bicycles with a boulevard on top. We have transformed a functional infrastructure assignment into a fully-fledged urban place with attractive spaces.
The Schreuders Prize 2022 Jury states:
‘A unique project with international allure.’
‘A potential export product combining cycling, water and engineering.’
‘The concept of IJboulevard and its application of the existing tunnel technology is very interesting. It is a unique project of international allure and makes a significant contribution to the city, with the back of Amsterdam Central Station given a new and distinctive front. The development improves the public space on two fronts: an unlocked ground level bringing bicycles underground, and the addition of a panoramic pedestrian boulevard on the IJ. At a complex urban location, the design offers an innovative and state-of-the-art solution that takes into account the presence of the North-South line tunnel and also forms a collision protection. A smart choice has been made to do business remotely and to keep production outside the city, minimising the disruption of urban development. Moreover, it is a potential export product that can be easily replicated at national and international level, and full of Dutch glory in its combination of cycling, water and engineering.’
Many thanks to the organization and everyone involved!
