VenhoevenCS designs underground bicycle parking facility Beursplein
14 June 2016
The municipality of Amsterdam awarded the contract for the design and construction of the underground bicycle parking garage ‘Beursplein’ to the building consortium KWS / Van Hattum en Blankevoort and VenhoevenCS architecture+urbanism. Their proposal offers the best conditions for this project, which has to be completed spring 2018.
The user-friendly underground bicycle parking space will offer 1700 parking spots. The redesign of the surrounding ‘Beurs’ area harks back to the original design of Berlage. For example: the drinking fountains and the monumental lampposts will be restored and placed back in their original positions.
The redesign of the ‘Beurs’ area and the bike parking are part of the Rode Loper project: the realisation of representative entrances of the city along the Noord/Zuidlijn. Goal of the project is to give pedestrians and cyclists more space and fewer obstacles in public space. The realisation of the ‘Beursplein’ project starts spring 2017.
