Building contract signed for energy-neutral Sports Complex Erasmus University Rotterdam
The new Sports Building of the Erasmus University on Campus Woudestein in Rotterdam, is designed as a training and sports facility that offers students much more than a venue to work out or play team sports.
The new building marks the entrance of the University Campus. The complex’s shape of stacked and connected ‘sports boxes’, behind a semi-transparent skin, creates a sculptural effect. The poetic, fragile façade changes during the day – depending on viewpoint, time, lighting and season – and turns a straightforward sports building into a dynamic living object.
The sports complex is organized around an inner street which connects the two main building volumes. Originally, the two plots were also separated by a street. The inner street, the backbone of the building with entrances on two sides, provides a clear orientation. The street does not only have a logistic function, but is also an important gathering place, offering plenty of spots to meet with your friends, have a drink, and enjoy an attractive view over the different sport activities. After all, the social aspect is an important motivation for people to do sports.
As a result of Erasmus University Rotterdam’s high ambitions with regards to sustainability and energy-use, the building is designed to be energy neutral and the interior is constructed mainly from circular building materials.Related News & Media
