Tender won: Haarlem Spaarnepoort.
7 October 2025
VenhoevenCS is creating a new icon for mobility and connection:
Haarlem Spaarnepoort.
The name, chosen from more than 1,000 submissions by residents, refers to its location near river Spaarne and underscores the hub’s role as the gateway to the city centre.
Spaarnepoort will be far more than a transfer point. It will be an urban ecosystem: a green hub where travelling, staying, and meeting come together. At its heart is a two-level bike parking facility for over 2,200 bicycles, accommodating every type, from XL cargo bikes to wide-tyred fat bikes. There will also be space for 100 shared bikes, enabling travellers to switch effortlessly to sustainable shared mobility. Together with a safe pedestrian underpass beneath the Schipholweg and eight high-quality bus stops, Haarlem gains a future-proof gateway.
The design places a strong emphasis on quality of life. By day, Spaarnepoort is a lively place to meet and relax; in the evening it remains safe and accessible thanks to open sightlines and good lighting. Using circular materials and reusing resources reduces environmental impact, while 172 new trees and added space for biodiversity contribute to a climate-resilient, green city.
VenhoevenCS architecture+urbanism is currently developing the plan with SANT EN CO Landschapsarchitectuur on behalf of Van Hattum en Blankevoort and KWS Infra for Gemeente Haarlem.
Construction is scheduled to start in 2026, with completion expected in 2029.
