What if we design a sports building as part of the landscape?

Sportkwartier Hoornse Vaart 12

VenhoevenCS and WIND design+build have formulated the answer to this question in their new design for the Hoornse Vaart swimming and sports complex in Alkmaar. Sports and the surrounding area are visibly connected both in and outside the complex. The design consists of a green façade. Airy frames soften the transition between the facility and the park area. The boundaries between in and outside gets blurred as the building blends in with its surroundings. A walkway offers visitors a view of the 50-metre pool and the outdoor environment, including the windmills on the Hoornse Vaart. This way, the connection with the city and its surroundings is always tangible.

Construction is expected to start in early 2027 and will be carried out in phases. The current complex will remain in use and will be dismantled in a circular manner. This way we allow the continued use of the sports facilities during construction and give valuable materials a second life. The complex is scheduled for completion in 2030.
