MORE Campus Life 1

Today we celebrate the ‘MORE’ milestone of completing two student housing blocks in Leiden. The blocks mark the entrance area of the city’s Bio Science Park. We designed the accommodations as well as the MORE campus plan, in collaboration with Paul de Ruiter Architects and Landlab.

Right ahead of the academic year 2023-2024, the two blocks offer new studios and numerous shared facilities to about 700 students at Leiden University. Social interaction will be a constant feature of MORE’s campus life, so the wide range of collective facilities are therefore concentrated at eye-level, in the building’s robust plinths. We have equipped these bases with solid brick facades. For the facades enveloping the student apartments above, we designed a series of aluminum elements. These frames form a repetitive faceted façade. Its resulting texture and the reflecting quality of the material create an ever-changing play of color, light and shadow. The set-back, with outdoor spaces all around the building, makes a clean horizontal distinction.

A series of adjoining buildings are being designed to complete MORE. Together with the existing ones, and with infrastructure and landscape, people, animals and plants they will contribute to the Leiden campus’ ecosystem.
